Orthopaedic Rehabilitation

Orthopaedic Rehabilitation

Orthopaedic rehabilitation, a.k.a. musculoskeletal rehabilitation, is a therapeutic and supervised program designed to help individuals recover from musculoskeletal injuries, diseases, or surgeries.
The musculoskeletal system consists of any muscular -, bony -, joint -, ligament -, and tendon structures. These parts play an important role in the ability to perform everyday activities.

We assist with final phase rehabilitation by means of a scientifically-based exercise prescribed program. Whether you’re recovering from surgery, dealing with a sports-related injury, or managing a chronic condition, we can support you on your road to recovery.
Strength and Conditioning (S&C)

Strength and Conditioning (S&C)

Strength and Conditioning (S&C) is the appropriate selection of exercises used to improve physical performance. Since its inception only athletes benefited from it however it is now used in both the sporting world and the general population. People of all ages and abilities can help older people maintain and improve their health and quality of life.

The goal of S&C is to enhance sporting and physical performance. We provide sport-specific exercises to improve athletic performance. We assist in reducing the incidence and severity of sport injuries and overused muscles. At the practice, we also place a big emphasis on technique to allow you to perform the most effective functional movement patterns.
Strength and ROM Testing

Strength and ROM Testing

Muscle strength is the ability of skeletal muscle to contract and develop force in order to provide stability and mobility to joints and related structures. Range of motion (ROM), on the other hand, is the extent to which body parts can move around a joint or fixed point. Both is essential for functional movement. Muscle strength & ROM testing is an important part in evaluations as it provides valuable information on strength, functional mobility, limitations and neurological deficits.

We use VALD handheld dynamometry to assess muscle strength & ROM. The dynamometer is held by the biokineticist to obtain an objective measurement of force. Ideal ratios and asymmetries of muscle groups is then be calculated and guides us in your rehabilitation process. An individualised specific training programme, based on your results, is then provided in order to address and improve possible imbalances in your body.
Prehabilitation

Prehabilitation

Prehabilitation involves increasing the functional capability of a client before a surgical procedure in order that the patient can better tolerate postoperative inactivity and any decline associated with health. This allows a client to be physically stronger before an operation. Hence, the fitter and stronger you are going into a surgical procedure, the higher the chances are of better functional ability afterwards. Therefore, it is vital to focus and work on any functional deficits before your operation. This will then help to build muscular strength, flexibility and joint range of motion which will allow you to have a strong and stable base to help improve recovery after surgery.

We act proactive and reduce the likelihood of injuries such as chronic and overuse injuries (acute injuries are not always preventable). A conditioned athlete is less likely to sustain an injury. We will identify areas of the body having weaker muscular strength or limited joint range of motion. This allows us to design an individualised strengthening program for the individuals’ specific needs.
Postural Analysis and Muscle Imbalances

Postural Analysis and Muscle Imbalances

Postural analysis is a process that looks at a person's balance and alignment. This also includes any asymmetries that are observed in posture. The goal of the analysis is to identify imbalances and abnormalities. and assess how they affect a person's body's movement and function.

Muscle imbalance occurs when there is a permanent shortening of muscles resulting from overuse. It is common that the opposing muscles can be lengthened and weaker. This can lead to other muscles compensate for the weaker muscles in the area. It becomes a vicious cycle. This cycle can often continue until corrected.

Pain, discomfort, and an increased likelihood of injury are often linked to postural analysis & muscle imbalance. During a postural assessment, we look at the whole body and observe which muscles might be shortened/ tight and lengthened/weakened. We then set up exercises to improve your posture to prevent any future injuries. We can then educate and provide exercises to address the weaknesses observed.
Running Analysis

Running Analysis

A running analysis studies running style looking at elements such as technique and foot placement. The analysis provides valuable information on joint deviations, etc.). We also analyse lack of movement restrictions (joint stiffness or muscle tightness) or the control (joint hypermobility or muscle weakness). movement risks, faulty patterns, and muscle weaknesses that may be impeding your progress.

We make use of biomechanical tests and video technology to conduct the analysis. The obtained information is then used to focus on your specific running goals and target areas. We also advise you on proper running techniques and create personalized programs.
Special Population

Special Population

Special populations involve individuals with a physical or mental impairment that may limit activities of daily living. As result, these populations often require unique exercise needs. Improving physical health is important to all populations to optimize functioning and even help better mental functioning and capacity.

We provide assistance through specific exercises to improve various aspects of health such as balance and being able to function independently. Other components that we focus on are muscular strength, walking ability, mobility and flexibility along with co-ordination.
Chronic Rehabilitation

Chronic Rehabilitation

Rehabilitation does not only focus on people with disabilities or physical impairments. It is just as important for anyone with a chronic health condition, impairment or injury that may be limiting their functioning.

We can help you through by using movement and exercise to better manage and improve quality of life as well as being able to perform activities of daily living more comfortably.
Cardiac Rehabilitation

Cardiac Rehabilitation

Cardiac rehabilitation is a medically supervised program that is intended to improve cardiovascular health. This means helping recover after a heart attack, other forms of heart disease, surgery or treatment. This form of rehabilitation cannot change your past, but it can help you improve your heart’s future health. The goal is to regain and retain muscular strength and cardiovascular fitness. It can also help reduce the likelihood of the condition worsening or future heart problems.

We teach and educate you to safely navigate your road to recovery. While taking into consideration your medical history we design an individualised specific training regime with safe and appropriate aerobic – and strengthening exercises.
Body Compositions and Fitness Evaluations

Body Compositions and Fitness Evaluations

Body composition is a method used to evaluate a person’s healthy body weight by looking at different factors altogether such as fat mass, lean muscle mass, and body fat percentage. It is a good indication of healthy weight rather than following traditional methods like BMI & normal body weight. Fitness evaluations Fitness evaluations are used to determine the level of health-related fitness components.

We employ numerous methods such as skinfold testing, waist-hip ratio, and fitness tests to test and determine health metrics. This helps us identify areas which you need to work on. These metrics and data are used to track you over a certain time frame to observe any changes. A second assessment is always done to measure any progress.

Schalk Joubert Biokineticist FAQs
What is the difference between biokinetics and physiotherapy?
The difference lies in the methods both professions use to treat injuries, conditions, and illnesses. Biokineticists use exercise and mobility regimes as treatment whereas physiotherapists use hands-on techniques such as manual therapy, shockwave and dry needling. Both have a distinctive and valuable space in the health sector and can contribute to their unique and special professions.
Do I need a doctor's referral for biokinetics treatment?
No, you can just make contact and make an appointment. Should a doctor refer you, you are welcome to bring along any referral letter.
How long does each session last?
First session: 60 minutes. Thereafter 30-45 minutes depending on your condition.
